Obituary

Katherine “Kitty” Dean Hughes was born in Wright Arkansas on Morrow Road, July 30th, 1936. She was preceded in death by her Father, John Lilburn Slaughter, Mother, Rosie Mae Slaughter, Sister, Laverne Partridge and a Brother, J.W. Slaughter. She is survived by her Son, David Lynn Hughes and Wife, Gina K. Hughes of Sherwood, a very special Nephew, Ken Fisher, along with many nieces, nephews and well over 100 cousins scattered across the United States. Her Father had 7 siblings and her Mother had 11. She worked at Kennedy’s Drugstore during her early teenage years. At 16 she began work at Fisher’s Café where she would meet her future husband, Olin Hughes. Katherine borrowed Olin’s car to drive back and forth to school, stirring up a lot of talk and small town gossip with him being 10 years her senior. Katherine and Olin fell head over heals in love and at the age of 19, she and Olin married in the living room of Kenneth and Mildred Fisher. They spent their honey moon in New Orleans, LA and Biloxi, MS. A few years later, Katherine gave birth to her only child, Lynn. In 1964 the family relocated to Mer Rouge LA, where Olin became the overseer for The Yarbrough Brother Farming Operation in Louisiana. In December of 1969 they returned back home to England, AR. Olin worked at the local grain elevator and ran a small family farm. Katherine went into the Dry Cleaning business in 1974 for the next 10 years. Kitty, as she was fondly know to friends and family, served on The Mulberry Cemetery Association for 40 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church, in England. She was also became an active member in the Democratic Party, in the early 80’s, through her affiliation with her second cousin Bill Gwatney. She enjoyed many epic adventures and hospitality of Las Vegas, Atlantic City, The Mississippi Gulf Casino’s, and Tunica. She was truly “Queen of the Machine”, she loved playing the slots and life, and was one Lucky Lady!
