Rev. Melvin Curtis Burkett, 96, of England, went to be with his Lord on Monday, July 24, 2023. He was the oldest son of Homer and Esther Cora Sawree Burkett. He was born on September 30, 1926, in Greenbrier, Arkansas.
Melvin had his own business where he worked as an auto mechanic and, for a time, he worked in retail for Western Auto. He proudly served in the US Navy during World War II and in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a true American patriot.
Melvin was an ordained minister, ordained through the Full Gospel Church of God. During the early to mid-1980’s, he built the Full Gospel Church building in England from the ground up. He never met a stranger and was passionate about people and their relationship with the Lord. He was meek and kind, a great husband, father, and grandfather. He was a “fixer,” capable of repairing any of the toys that needed his expert skills.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Esther Burkett; his wife, Idel Vint Burkett; his sisters, Erma Geane Weaver, Lois Phillips, Joan Marion Burkett, and Johnnie Lee Burkett; his brothers, Kenneth Burkett, and Franklin Dee Burkett; his grandsons, Cortney Allen and Lance Allen Duck. He was, also, preceded in death by his only son, US Army Sgt. Curtis Earl Burkett, who was killed February 19, 1971, in Southeast Asia. Melvin is survived by his daughter, Ledi (Allen) Duck of England; his brother Marcus Wayne (Brenda) Burkett of England; his granddaughters, Kaylyn Corie (Greyson) Farris of Prairie Grove and Raelin Michelle (Dr. Andrew) Schroeder of Benton; his grandsons, Chason Allen Duck of England and Michael Curtis (Deanna) Burkett of Houston, Texas; great-granddaughter, Alexandria Jazgul Burkett; and great-grandson Landon Duck-Schroeder; and a host of nieces and nephews.
There will be a private visitation for family only on Monday, July 31, at 9:30 AM. Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM at Mulberry Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Wilson Robison Funeral Home in England.
